Every homage brand needs one watch that gets photographed next to the reference it is copying, and for Pagani Design that watch is the PD-1661. It borrows the Submariner’s proportions closely enough that the resemblance is the entire pitch, and it prices the result at $133 to $139 direct from the manufacturer, a fraction of what the watch it resembles costs at retail.
The case is 40mm across and 13mm thick, cut from 316L steel with a screwed crown, and Pagani Design puts a hard-coated, anti-reflective sapphire crystal over the dial rather than the mineral glass you would expect at this money. Water resistance is rated to 100 meters, 10 bar, enough for swimming and showering without a second thought, not enough to call this a tool for actual diving. Inside is a Miyota 8215, a plain Japanese automatic that neither hacks nor hand-winds and is stated to run 41 hours off the wrist. Lug to lug goes unpublished, and so does the bezel material, gaps in a spec sheet that otherwise reads like a costlier watch’s.
That movement is the honest ceiling here, and I don’t think it needs to apologize for what it is. A Miyota 8215 is dull, reliable, and serviceable by almost any watchmaker on earth, which is worth something a flashier in-house caliber does not always offer. It will not regulate the way a chronometer-grade escapement does, and Pagani Design makes no claim that it will. What buys back the difference is the case and the crystal: sapphire over a 316L body is not something $133 usually gets you.
The more useful comparison isn’t Rolex, whatever the marketing implies. It’s San Martin, whose SN0121GA runs the same homage idea with a ceramic bezel for roughly a hundred dollars more. If the ethics of wearing a near-copy bother you at all, that extra money buys a watch that looks less like it is trying to be mistaken for something else. If it doesn’t bother you, the PD-1661 is a competent way to wear a dive watch shape for less than a tank of gas a month, with a bare-bones movement as the one thing you are visibly trading away.
