Spirit
the pilot's watch that won't name its own caliber
Longines dropped a COSC-certified movement with a silicon balance spring into a 40mm steel pilot's case at $2,550, then wouldn't name the caliber.

Longines dug into its own 1930s aviation archive for the Spirit, then armed it with a Swiss chronometer certificate that most watches at this price never carry. The 40mm steel case, ref. L3.810.4.53.6, houses a self-winding movement beating at 25,200 vph, with a silicon balance spring and a power reserve Longines states at 72 hours. Every example is COSC-certified before it leaves the factory, which is still a genuinely unusual thing to find under three thousand dollars.
The odd part is what Longines will not tell you. The caliber is widely reported elsewhere as the L888.4, an ETA-based movement Longines has used across several collections, but the manufacturer’s own product page never names it. Case thickness and lug to lug are absent too. For a brand this large, that is a strange amount of restraint on a page whose entire job is to sell you the watch.
What you do get, on the manufacturer’s own word, is sapphire crystal coated on both faces, a screw-down crown, and 100 meters of water resistance the case will rarely need under a shirt cuff. The steel bracelet’s triple safety clasp is a real step up from a plain fold-over, and at $2,550 it should be. That price is the number worth sitting with. Tudor’s Black Bay costs more and buys more heritage weight; the Hamilton Khaki Field costs a third as much for a simpler ETA-adjacent movement with no COSC paperwork at all. The Spirit sits between them, asking you to pay for a certificate and a silicon spring rather than for anything you can actually see on the wrist.
