Tudor’s Black Bay 58 is the watch half the homage industry is quietly tracing, and Pagani Design’s PD-1671 is one of its more literal attempts: a screw-down crown, gilt dial details, and on the red colorway a bezel triangle in the same shade Tudor made famous, all cased in 42mm of 316L steel for $175.74. Pagani Design even names the red version “The Vintage Bay” in its own marketing copy, so nobody involved is pretending otherwise.
The case runs 42mm across and 14mm thick, weighing 179g, with sapphire crystal carrying a hard anti-reflective coating over the dial rather than mineral glass. Water resistance is rated to 330 feet, Pagani Design’s own way of writing 100 meters, enough for the pool and the shower and not a figure anyone involved calls dive certified. Inside sits a Miyota 8215, the same plain Japanese automatic that powers the brand’s cheaper PD-1661, stated to run 42 hours and built to neither hack nor hand-wind. Lug to lug and bezel material go unpublished, same gap the brand leaves on its other homages.
That movement is doing less for more money here than it does one page over. The PD-1661 puts the identical 8215 in a 40mm case for $133 to $139; the PD-1671 asks $40 or $50 more for two extra millimeters of diameter, a slightly thicker case, and a bonus leather strap thrown in as a gift. None of that buys a better engine. If the Black Bay silhouette specifically is the draw, the premium is defensible. If it isn’t, the PD-1661 is the same watch, cheaper, and I’d buy that one.
The honest comparison isn’t really Pagani’s own catalogue, though. It’s the Tudor Black Bay 58 itself, which runs a manufacture movement, a proper dive rating, and a price tag north of four thousand dollars for the privilege. The PD-1671 will never close that gap and doesn’t claim to. What it offers is the shape, in steel, with sapphire over the dial, for a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the watch. Whether that trade works for you is the only question that matters here.
